A Taste of Rand: Son of Tallav

How about an excerpt from my work in progress, Rand: Son of Tallav. This excerpt shows how Rand perceives women. Born on the matriarchal planet, Tallav, he’s got plenty of reasons for his opinion. He’s also always believed he’d never fall in love.
The pounding in his head had grown worse despite the pill he’d taken. He shoved his chair in and headed toward the door.
“Rand, sit down and finish your breakfast,” his mother said.
“I’m not hungry. I’m going to grab my jacket and walk to the courthouse. I’ll see you there.”
Jen rose and said, “I’ll come with you.”
KkHe barked his response. “No.”
Her eyes widened, and she rocked back.
With effort, he softened his voice. “No. I need some time alone, to think.”
The tremulous smile that lifted her lips made his throat feel thick. He averted his gaze and left, ignoring when his mother called his name again.
The jacket he’d planned to wear today was hanging from the clothes butler. He slipped into it, rolling his shoulders. Long strides carried him out of the apartment and onto the street. He glowered at the beautiful autumn day that met him. Brilliant blue sky and the splendor of the mixed greens, yellows, and oranges of the trees lining the parkway did little to brighten his mood.
Fuck! At every critical juncture of his life a woman had wrenched happiness from him. Why did it surprise him that yet again his future was to be determined by a female. He’d left Tallav to get away from this very thing, and yet he’d allowed his mother to suck him into this fool’s charade.
